Making coffee at 10pm (this is normal right?)

Kept missing the quill challenges for Pottermore early access, then the seventh day which also happens to be my anniversary (UK time of course) is when I get access. I'm so super dorky, nerdy, crazily excited. I can't stand it. I joined the Harry Potter series at a time in my life when I needed an outlet. I was at a thankless job, suffering panic attacks, on the verge of a breakdown (I'm not the dramatic type folks) and I gave this series a try. Never having grown up with the series I've felt like an outsider to the fandom, an obsessed can-give-you-a-run-for-your-money-in-trivia-questions fan, but still an outsider. Now having won early access I feel like I'm right there with everyone else. I'm excited and can't wait to see what this site brings. Here's hoping that when my husbanded signed me up on his iPhone and couldn't scroll, that my date of birth being '97 instead of '86 won't be limiting me. Nonetheless I'm super excited, super dorked out, and super crazy looking after posting this. Now to enjoy my french vanilla coffee and read some of Philosopher's Stone!

Alternative

Yeah it's been a while. Since moving back to my hometown, I've been busier than ever. Meaning I've been neglecting the tiny blog audience (let's face it the three of you) for a while. My love and apologies. Alright, so saying I love my dog is an understatement, considering the url for my blog is his name. I've always wanted to know exactly what he is eating and where it comes from. Look at most pet food labels, chicken by part. What is that anyway? I don't really want to know. So I found this wonderful recipe to make your own dog meals, I know where all the ingredients come from, and I know what exactly is going into his meals. And the bonus, my dog goes CrAzY for his meals. It's pretty simple to make, well it takes maybe an hour. But if you have a food chopper that can cut back on some time. The recipe makes enough for my 9lbs. dog to eat for the week. Also it tastes good enough that a human can just add salt and enjoy.

Yummy, right?

3lbs. Chicken (3 large breasts do the trick)
2 1/2 cups minced celery and carrot (1 1/4 of each)
3 1/2 cups white rice
6 1/2 cups water

Using a chopper will work quicker than mincing by knife.
Also using some of the water from the boiled chicken will cause the taste to absorb into the rice.

-Boil chicken in pot (boils faster if the breasts are cut into fourths)
-Combine all ingredients in a large pot
-Bring to boil then lower to medium heat
-Simmer for 10-20 minutes until the rice has absorbed all water and is tender
-Cool and serve
-Store leftovers in the refrigerator

When serving your pup the cold leftovers you can add a small amount of water and microwave for 5-10 seconds depending on your microwave. Now we are still new at this so we are serving Scooter half a cup in the mornings and half a cup at night. Keep in mind he only weighs 9lbs. Start your dog off with smaller portions, it's easier to give more if he is hungry. But over feeding can cause bloat. That is with any food though. Make it once a week and your pup can be eating like a king. It costs less than $10 to make, well worth it if you ask me. This food is fresh and doesn't sit on a shelf for who knows how long. It was so yummy that Scooter was running back to his bowl just to lick the taste off it. :D

New House-Landscaping

The flowers surrounding the mailbox.

I normally don't plant annuals, but I figured why not.

Two of these are planted. I'm not good with plant names. I just make sure to get perennials that need full sun.

One of three rose bushes in the front yard. My mom will be taking at least one of them. I don't need so much to mow around, and I'd like to make a rock garden.

I don't have much of a green thumb, so here's hoping I don't kill all these poor plants.

I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!

The big move is D-O-N-E! Now to get our old house ready to sell, and get it sold. Shouldn't be too difficult as the area we lived in has fixer uppers in our house's price range. Ours will be basically move in ready. The real estate agent we'll be using is pretty good.

I've lived without internet for a week, got to admit that was pretty sucky. Had to go to my mom's house and borrow her's for the little time I snuck onto Facebook. Other than that I was limited to my iPhone. Must admit, I didn't mind not being able to browse the world wide web, I just hated not having Netflix on my PS3. Which wonderfully enough the PSN is back up, so now I get to enjoy my Hulu again. Sony is offering two free games (of a limited variety) to all Playstation users. Also when you first log back on you must change your password for security reasons.

Alright, so in the feel of needing a subject let me hand out some moving tips.

1. Make sure you have more extra $$$ than you planned on spending.

2. If you don't have pros helping with the move, have beer for the epic buddies who will be helping. Or offer to cook them a meal.

3. Don't let the less organized person pack.

4. Try to save money by getting boxes from grocery stores, dollar stores, fast food restaurants. Hardees has these great fry boxes that were the perfect size and strength.

5. Use this as an opportunity to eliminate clutter from your life. Get rid of old clothes, books, dishes, anything you've not used within the last 5 years. Don't get trash happy and throw out any sentimental items.

6. Make a To Do list and stick with it. Don't forget to add to the list change of address with USPS (which you can do online). Be sure to also do a change of address with places you regularly shop and owe money to. A change of address with USPS is good for one year.

7. Label boxes as detailed as you can. What room it goes to, and an example of what's in the box.

8. When moving pets place them in a quiet room and let them explore the house on there own. If you're like me and have a dog that terrorizes the cats, then move the cats first and let them explore with the dog out of the house.

9. Wash all your dishes before putting them away. Cause really do you want to taste bubble wrap or newspaper?

10. Take breaks while unpacking. This isn't a race to see who's the fastest unpacker in the west. Unpack, relax, unpack some more. And either focus on one room at a time, or spread it out. Whichever works best for you. I personally was able to move stuff over time, and had the guest bedroom and master bedroom pretty much done by move in day. The bathroom was the first full room done, then the living room, then the kitchen. Now I'm tackling the dining room, and the husband and I took care of the office. With the exception of a few of my husband's boxes. Luckily my husband unpacked the third bedroom all on his own, which coincidentally enough is his guy room anyway.

Well...I've missed blogging, as I'm sure you've totally missed reading my ramblings. I sort of pulled this out of my head in under 10 minutes, so it's all sorts of sloppy I'm sure.

Sing It Foo Fighters....

Call and I'll answer at home in the lost and found
You say that I'm much too proud
Someone who's taking pleasure in breaking down
You wont find me I'm going MIA
Tonight I'm leaving going MIA
So you don't find me I'm going MIA
Tonight I'm leaving going MIA
Say good-bye to me I'm going MIA

My creative way of saying due to the husband's college graduation,  party, and moving plans I will be MIA for a few. Expect my sporadic blogging to return at the end of next week.

Where were you?

Not to quote the country song intentionally, but where were you during 9/11? I was a sophomore in high school, in choir class but unaware. Went to my World Civilizations class and saw the tv was on. I went through the day terrified that more attacks would come. On the way home saw huge lines of people getting gas. Watched Fox News and CNN all day. Really every channel was covering the news. It was so unreal, it was scary.

Fast forward. May 1, 2011. I was watching South Park on Netflix. Got onto Facebook on my iPhone out of boredom, only to see people posting of Osama Bin Laden's death. Turned on ABC and watched the president confirm it.

I will remember both days for years to come, can't guarantee forever because let's face it, my memory sucks at times. But still. This is Pearl Harbor and Hitler's death for our generation.

Getting a cat?

Always wanted a cat but never had one? I can't fully prepare you for getting a cat, however I can give you an idea of what you'll want to buy for your new furry pal. As the pet mom of four cats, I can tell you each cat has it's own personality. There are pure bred cats you can purchase, but considering how many cats are put down each year I'd highly recommend adopting. Unless of course you have allergy issues. Depending on the shelter it shouldn't be too expensive adopting. Just so happens all of ours are purely rescue or farm cats, so I've never dealt with a shelter. Before getting a cat research them. A vague idea of what to expect, feed them daily, clean the litter box daily, fresh water, ect. Not very high maintenance. Since I chose all my dog items from Petsmart, I decided to head over to Wal-Mart for cats.

I love the design of this carrier, it got good reviews as well. Only $20. My cats have beds and two of them use the beds. So it's a hit or miss whether or not your cat will use theirs. So for a first time bed you might want to go cheap, this one $21 but they have cheaper. I just picked this one because it looks like one my cats or dog would use. Now I don't have a cat tree, but I really want to get one when we have the space. They can run a hefty price, and there are several websites for directions on a DIY cat tree. This one is $95, not too bad. Like I said, if you have the room and money it's a good idea. Cats love love love high places to sleep. Also cat trees tend to have several scratching posts.

So feeding is pretty basic, you can get a pet fountain which can range from $30-$100+ for water. We just use regular bowls. But yeah, bowls $5 and the mat is $10, but you can find them cheaper than that. I recommend a decent sized food bin. This one is $20, again I just use an old cup to scoop the food out. I would hunt around the store, maybe check where they keep the other bins if you're looking for something cheaper. As far as food goes, I would avoid the really cheap stuff like Meow Mix and off brands, a lot of those can cause the cat to gain weight. Try to stick with an indoor formula if your cat is going to be indoors. I normally try to get Purina. Pet food is just something each owner will have their preference for.

Litter is a hard thing to pick out sometimes. Do you want it to clump? Do you want organic? I normally use Arm & Hammer Multi Cat ($12-$15). But if money is tight I just get the $4 Wal-Mart brand. Just throw some baking soda into the litter to help it stay fresh. The litter box I picked is basic and works quiet well. Only $8, the automatic ones are normally a rip off. The ones with sifters can become messy. The sifter is only $2. Clean the litter box out daily and it should take less than five minutes, also instead of buying kitty trash bags, you can always recycle plastic shopping bags.

Alright so some more basics: collar and id tag. Again I keep the id tags basic; pet's name and phone number. A brush and nail trimmers, also for the occasional gross cat shampoo. I might bath my cats once or twice a year. Just depends on if they get gross feeling. As far as cat toys go, laser lights are awesome. Scratching posts are a must if you want to keep your furniture unscathed. You can find a good scratching post for under $10. A string toy is great too. And maybe some cat nip toys.

I know this looks like a lot, and it can be a lot for the initial set up. But your looking at under $100. Just depends on how much you want to get. But the bare basics are: Carrier, collar, id, food & water bowls, litter box, scoop, food, cat litter, and grooming. I wouldn't worry about going overboard on toys in the beginning. Just a few then maybe buy more later.

Be sure when you bring the new kitty home to put them in a quiet room, open the carrier, then let them roam on their own. Best to put the litter box and food in the quiet room. Once the cat is adjusted to the new home, then you can place the litter and food where it will normally go. Cats are very simple to house break. Generally just place the cat in the clean litter box, and rub their paws on the litter. They get the picture. All of our cats have only had to be introduced to the litter box once.

Enjoy your new pet, and remember the best thing to give them is a loving and stable home.

Getting a Dog?

There are many things to consider before getting a dog....

Fenced in yard? Not a necessity, but pretty nice to have. Are you willing to walk the dog daily? With our current living situation we don't have sidewalks, not as safe for dog walking. However we lucked out, our small dog gets good exercise in our yard. Medium to large sized dogs need a daily walk. They need the exercise, but they also just need to get that energy out. If you've got a "crazy" dog try walking him more frequently. Can't walk him, take him to the dog park.

Also consider the type of dog you want. Male or female? Pure bred or pound mutt? If you are considering pure bred, research the breeders and the breed. Do a home visit to see what environment your dog is coming from. AKC registered breeders are always the best to look for. For more on puppy mills click here and here. Unfortunately I didn't research our breeder enough, and Scooter came from a puppy mill. He is the sweetest dog I've ever had, but he does have his problems. Fear of strangers, excessive barking, and he can get territorial. Getting your dog from a shelter is a wonderful thing to do. Pet stores like Petco and Petsmart will have adoption days, this is when local shelters bring in cats and dogs to be adopted. Much different then the dogs being sold by the store, most of those dogs do come from puppy mills.

Alright so you've picked out your dog, congrats! Aside from the "supplies" I'm about to list, let me recommend if this is your first dog, or the first dog you've had in a long time, invest i training classes.

Alright so lets get to it. I'm not pimping out Petsmart, but all the items I'm listing are from their website. I don't buy all my pet stuff from Petsmart. I generally shop at Petsmart, Petco, Wal-Mart, or Kroger for my pet needs. Food is a big issue. I've had vets who've said buy what you can afford, other vets that try to push certain brands on you. As long as beef or chicken is the first ingredient you're good. We started Scooter off on Purina One Puppy Chow. We fed him another Purina One food (it was the red bag), now we feed him Beneful. He loves it and is healthy. We also give him a Cesar wet food once a day, he's at a normal weight. If you're dog is overweight I wouldn't recommend the wet food.

If your dog is medium to large I recommend getting some sort of elevated bowls to help avoid bloat, however it's not agreed upon by all, so consult your vet. The elevated bowls can cost between $25-40 at Petsmart, but you can check Amazon and Wal-Mart for cheaper options. I just use normal bowls and a placemat. The bowls pictured are under $2 each and the placemant is $5. If you like traveling and want to take your dog with you, get a traveling water dish. I love mine, and better to that Scooter loves it. I just so happened to stumble upon ours at a Dollar Tree, but you can find one for under $6. My final recommendation isn't a necessity by any means, just a convenience. My animals like to get into the bags and eat food directly from there, so I invested in some pet food holders. I didn't bother with scoop, I just use old cups.

My animals tend to be rough on stuff at times, so I normally choose inexpensive beds, the one pictured is $20. Heck you could just get a nice sized pillow and pillow case if you want. Honestly our dog doesn't really use his pet bed, but it's nice to have one for him. Scooter has an extra large crate because my husband and I used to have a crazy schedule and he'd be caged for about 8 hours a day. So if you have to leave your dog alone I'd recommend getting a nice sized crate. Now I have portable crates for all my cats, so when we travel I just keep our large portable crate in the Jeep in case we need it. Portable crates can start at $20 depending on where you shop. Scooter is a good car dog, but I will normally attach him to the seatbelt with his harness if it's just the two of us. Now as far as dog playpens go, I've never used one. I have friends who've used them for their smaller dogs. Really they can be nice for puppies. But if you have an older dog, or a dog that can jump over it, it's pointless. Starting off they can cost $65 depends on the size you get. Now gates are pretty important in our house. I have places I don't like Scooter to go since he tends to occasionally pee/poop inside. Also he's a scavenger, he'll get into anything he can. Now I'd really recommend getting baby gates, pet gates are too expensive and they're the same thing. If you get a walk through gate be sure to measure your doorway first. Metal walk through gates can be found under $50.

There are way too many options for the next few things I'll mention so I'll just skip the pictures for this. All dogs should have a collar and id tag. Your id tag should have the dogs name and your phone number or email address. You can even put your physical address if it'll fit. Ours is basic, Scooter (xxx) xxx-xxxx and city, state. You can find dog collars at so many places. A leash and harness are also musts. Not necessarily the harness, but I love having a harness for Scooter. It works out so well to walk him, and to have him in the car. Also a brush and nail clippers. I'd also recommend a tooth brush, human or dog both work the same. Getting a basic human tooth brush is cheaper. Just be sure to use a dog toothpaste. Oral care is very important for dogs, teeth problems can affect their organs. I try to brush Scooter once a week, but realistically I don't. However his teeth are very strong and clean. If I notice they look dirty I'll brush. Dog shampoo, doesn't have to be expensive, it could even be baby shampoo. I just use this stuff I find at Wal-Mart, costs a few bucks and lasts for months. Scooter's shampoo has oatmeal in it, that helps with his coat.

Alright and finally the fun stuff, toys. Go crazy. Be sure if your dog has a lot of toys (like mine) to phase them out. That way the pup won't get bored. One thing I love that Scooter has is his Kong and Wigzi. You can put treats in there. You can even freeze a mixture of hard/soft food, keeps them occupied for hours at times.
Hope I haven't scared anyone away from getting a dog. I swear this blog might be long, but it's really not as bad as it seems. It just depends on what kind of dog you have. You might get the kind of dog that can just be trusted to roam around the house. No need for kennels or gates. But just be prepared to spend $50-$100 when you get a new pet. Not counting the cost of the pet of course.

Now I did leave out dog clothes, and here's why....

Some pet owners are into clothing a pet, and that's fine. Me personally I love dressing Scooter up. BUT let me stress this, if the dog isn't into it don't do it. Scooter loves his clothes, gets excited when he sees them, even prances around in his outfits. But if he fought me putting a shirt on him I wouldn't do it. As it is, I'm lucky, he puts his arms into the sleeves and wags his tail in excitement when I pull out his clothes box.

So I hope this has been informative, and please enjoy your new pet. All the hassle that Scooter can be I'd never exchange him for another dog.

Recent Netflixin'

I don't like spoiling movies, so be warned......

Watched The Kids Are Alright. I'm not a fan of movies that are over sexed, and that's what this was. It had a good storyline, and overall I did like the movie. I would've liked to know more about what happened to the sperm donor at the end of the movie.

Failed watching 2012 and The Crazies neither could keep my attention. I managed to watch 2012 all the way through, but ended up stopping The Crazies after 30 minutes. 2012 was just way to unrealistic for me. Not only the main storyline, but come on John Cusack so shouldn't have made it when that winnebago went into the fiery pit. I didn't fully pay attention to the movie, so I don't really know what happened to the boyfriend in the end.

Psychomania is a 70's cult classic, it's cheesy but I love watching it. It's pretty creepy. This leader of a biker gang finds out that if you commit suicide but believe that you will live, then you come back undead. Not vampire or zombie, just undead. It's creepy like I said, but I wouldn't consider it horror.

Paranormal Activity I love it, but I loved watching it with someone who could warn me before stuff happened. I love how realistic it looks, and that they didn't over do it. Most of the time you hear the entity not see it. You only see shadows once or twice, which helped make it more realistic. Paranormal Activity 2 is coming in the mail sometime at the beginning of the week.

This last one I watched about a month ago, SNL:The Best of Saturday TV Funhouse love it, anyone who loved SNL in the 90's and early 2000's should watch this. Good stuff. Lots of Fun With Audio and Ambiguously Gay Duo sketches.

Nostalgia

Already posted this on my Facebook, but what the hey. I have very goofy moments of looking at my pets when they were babies and getting all "Aww". I can only imagine how it will be when I have human kids. So anyway after some picnik'ing figured I could share with y'all.

We got Boots and Smokey from my aunt when we were newlyweds. They're only a month apart in age, both turning/turned six this year. Boots is a noisy and cranky cat, Smokey is a sweet dog/human like cat.

Sirius came to us in July 2007, literally. We were getting out of our car after working 2nd shift, when we heard dogs barking and saw this tiny black kitten. My husband called for him, and he jumped into his arms. I grabbed him from the hubby, took him inside, fed him, bathed him, and loved him immediately. He's been with us ever since, even though my husband nor I officially said we're keeping him.

Scooter is our first dog, after deciding on a breed and hunting for a breeder, we picked him. Originally named Cuteness, I went with friends to pick him up. Only to find his home wasn't any sort of home for a pet. He was filthy, so bad I had a hard time holding him. His parents were outside in a chicken coop. All the other puppies were in crates. There was no way I was backing out of this, after he was bathed I brought him home. He never had separation anxiety, and has been attached to me since day one. Now after all this time we've come to understand he was abused. He's terrified of children (the kids there were forced to care for the dogs) and men. He has stranger anxiety, but once he gets to know you he loves you. We call him little Marley (after the book/movie), during training when he'd misbehave the trainer would just laugh at him. He was too cute for her to scold.

When Socks was four weeks old his mother abandoned him. We took him home from my mother in laws and bottle fed him. He was too young to even poop or pee on his own. He's Scooter's best friend, and my husband's cat through and through. He has no interest in me, except when he's hungry or lonely. But he loves to sleep on me, and tries to nurse on my blanket (arm, leg, the couch, anything.) He's the craziest not-cat cat you can ever have.

Wish List Friday (cause Thursdays weren't working)

With the possibility of selling our house and moving ahead of us I'm thinking about paint colors. So I headed over to myperfectcolor. I love some of the colors that are used in our current house, and others I've started second guessing. Well mostly just the green in my husband's office. Wanting some change but not much, I've found colors that aren't exact but pretty close. One house we are potentially looking at has an open floor plan. The kitchen, living room, dinning, and bonus room are all pretty open. So I'm thinking a combo of this Rain Lily and a few walls painted Red Pepper. Rain Lily is pretty close with the color of our current living room which I *love* and Red Pepper isn't exactly like the red in our current kitchen, but I love red and I love trying different shades of red.

Red Pepper
Rain Lily

We just repainted our bedroom and I love the color so we will just be using that color in our next bedroom. We'll still be going with the gamer/geek theme. I can't find the paint color online, but it's by Better Homes and Gardens. So instead I can provide a picture of my cluttered bedroom.

Porch Gray

Our potential house is a three bedroom, not sure what colors we are going to use. The smallest bedroom is wallpapered. I'm not a big fan of the wallpaper, but I might find another wallpaper to use. What's your thoughts on wallpapering. Nay, yay, outdated? We plan on hiding the litter box in there and other cat related stuff. That's also where Kyle can keep all his Lego stuff. Might take down the wallpaper and do some Lego decals or something like that. The second bedroom which is across from the master will be a guest room/future nursery. I'll be shoving all my Harry Potter stuff in there. I figure the rest of the house can look like grown ups live there, but the bedrooms can be geeky/young/childish. Not sure what color to paint the room. Might just leave three walls white and paint one porch gray. That way there can be color, but it won't be gender related and it can be Harry Potterish. I'm weird and hate white, except for in bathrooms. I love having a white bathroom, I normally add accent colors. Well really just the shower curtain, but still. Other than that I love white in the bathroom, it looks clean and fresh. Alright, well I leave it at that. Might do a landscaping wish list next time.

If you play that John Lennon song backwards it says "imagine all the people browsing at the mall".

House chores are done, and the rain is coming and going. Nothing better to be doing. Daria marathon. Please please please tell me I'm not the only person who loves that show. I haven't watched it in years and thanks to wonderful Hulu Plus, I'm watching it right now. Reminds me of when my best friend Brittany and I would watch it in middle school.

When you used to tell me that you chase tornadoes, deep down I thought it was just a metaphor.

Crazy weather was had this afternoon, now the sun is shining. When it's storming do you have a go to movie? I love watching Twister when the weather is bad. Bill Paxton is in several of my top 10 favorite non-Harry Potter movies. I think the casting was perfect, and I love the storyline. No twisters here, but the storm was still pretty cool looking.

Only to find the driver had ran off. So anyway here I am now.

I really want a battery grip for my camera but they are impossible to find, as they are no longer making them.

Wish List Thursday

Here's for a theme I'll completely forget about next week....

I love photography. I love capturing the perfect picture. I love getting an emotion by the press of a button. I simply love love love the gadgets that help you accomplish all of it. I love having my Sony Alpha, it's a great camera that's accessories aren't as expensive as other brands. I don't have many complaints about my camera, just really one actually...well two. First off it's impossible to find a battery grip for it since they no longer make them for the Alpha A230. Second, not all camera stores sell accessories for my camera because it isn't Canon or Nikon. Lame if you ask me. So I just go to Amazon for my camera needs. My current camera wish list has about $3200 worth of accessories I want.

Opteka 650-2600mm
The box only says to 650-1300mm but the description says 650-2600mm. It's going for $300. Comes with the lens only.

Phoenix 650-130mm
This is going for $280 and comes with a cleaning kit and tripod. I already have one, but having another can never be a bad thing. It also comes with a carrying case, I'm trying to pick between this one and the one above.

Kenko 420-800mm
Lens alone, no sort of kit. $180

Phoenix 500mm
Comes with a cleaning kit and monopod. $130. Cheaper than the one above and comes with more. Neither come with a case. I'm leaning towards the 500mm.

Sony 75-300mm
Going for $250. Very sad considering how much I can get telephoto lenses for. But it's Sony brand so that explains.

Sony 50mm
Good macros and portraits from what others have posted. I love doing macros. Going for a measly $150.

Rokinon FE8M-S 8mm
I really really REALLY want a fisheye lens. Really. Going for a strange $272. The example pictures are awesome.

Opteka Super Wide Angle Panoramic Macro Fisheye
Going for $30, I love the pictures this can take. I love the price too.

55mm Wide Angle Lens
$15 can't beat that price. The example photos weren't that good, but I think it's because the photographer wasn't that good. Or maybe just poor choice of subject.

It's a frightening amount of money I want to spend, but I know I will get a lot of use out of the lenses I choose. If I remember next week, I'll post other accessories I'd love to have. Cheaper accessories :D
